What is Womb Steaming?

Traditionally in Morocco womb steaming is a common practice for all postpartum mothers , but is also known to be a significantly worldwide practice too.

In the UK postpartum care is minimal, involving a 6 week check-up at your GP centre, during this period your body is undergoing a huge healing process, closing of the vaginal canal, the uterus removing left over lochia, the uterus reducing to its normal size. During this period common complications may arise such as infections, uterus contractions, swollen skin or vaginal prolapse.

Womb steaming is an ancient tradition which involves the new mother sitting over a warm bowl of postpartum herbs chosen carefully to help cleanse or detoxify. The steam from these herbs enters the vagina, is absorbed through tissue walls and flows through the blood promoting cleansing and healing of all the abdominal organs. Womb steaming has shown a relief to complications such as haemorrhoids, infections, constipations, water retention, postpartum contractions and prolapse.

Previous case studies show womb steaming has shown lochia drains after the first 5-6 sessions as opposed to the norm of 6 weeks, the uterus shrinks back to size within the first two weeks as opposed to 4-5 and after 4-5 weeks the vaginal canal is tightened in comparison to mothers who have not had steaming and those who believe it will never be tight again.

Any woman, of any age, a mother or not will BENEFIT from womb steaming, research is now proving womb steaming can help conditions such as regular infections, pms, endrometisis, period pain issues, heavy bleeding issues, trauma. I could give you a list but the list is endless! This is an ancient blessing us women, have been blessed with to use and heal with!

Closing The Bones Ceremony

Closing The Bones Ceremony

So you’ve given birth within the first year of postpartum, Amazing! Though maybe your pelvic floor feels weakened since giving birth? Has your back ache worsened? Or do you feel something loose or achy? Have you emotionally healed and accepted motherhood? Have you supported and nourished your amazing body? Did you know your entire body has stretched to its maximum capacity and now your organs are trying to realign and return back into place. What have you in place to HELP you HEAL and HOLD everything together…

Closing the bones is an ancient Moroccan ceremony which I have been blessed and taught by traditional midwifes. It consists of using handmade material such as wool or cotton, the mother is wrapped and pulled together from head to toe. It is a way to support the new mothers healing, helping the body return to a pre pregnancy state, supporting the joints and muscles and aiding in the uterus and womb returning back into place.

Part of the Closing ceremony

It is a ceremony taking at least up to 2 hours, the whole body is hugged  creating a warm sense of protection and healing, lightening all the body’s pain and aches and alleviating any pelvic instability. The space is scented with a mesmerising blend of natural traditional soaked Moroccan woodchips/resins, traditionally used to adore and celebrate the new mother. The Closing ceremony traditionally is also known to help hormonal balance after birth, any unwanted discharge or tissue/clots, supporting the womb area of the body to be clean and return to a pre pregnancy state. Closing the bones ceremony also provides postural support for the torso, supports the abdominal wall healing as “Diastasis Recti” is very common due to a growing uterus in pregnancy which stretches the abdominal muscles causing the abdomen to separate. Restores pelvic floor muscles, supports the bodies natural spine and posture realignment after birth, prevents weight gain and stabilises any loose ligaments.

The act of closing the bones includes a massage with natural olive oil on the legs/arms before the closing ceremony whilst the new mother peacefully lays relaxing her body soothed by listening to authentic traditional Moroccan music ending with belly binding.

Traditionally the closing the bones ceremony is recommended to be done 3-4 times at least within the first week after giving birth or within the first 40 days for optimal effects but is also recommended to be done at-least 3 times within the first year.
